Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that Call of Duty has passed 40 billion US dollars in lifetime revenue, just days after Modern Warfare 4 launched. Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass yet: Activision says it arrives there in Holiday 2027.
The milestone
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on X on October 26 that the Call of Duty franchise has passed 40 billion US dollars in lifetime revenue. She tied the news to Modern Warfare 4, calling it one of the most celebrated games in the series' 24-year history and describing the total as an incredible milestone. Sharma also congratulated the Activision team and thanked players for being with the franchise. The announcement came just days after Modern Warfare 4 launched, and the figure covers the whole franchise rather than any single release.
How the series grew
Game Rant adds that the climb began with the original Call of Duty in 2003, but the series truly transformed with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward's 2007 shooter moved the series away from its original World War II setting and helped establish multiplayer progression, perks, custom loadouts and killstreaks. World at War introduced the Zombies mode soon afterward. Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops and Black Ops 2 then cemented the series into the annual blockbusters fans know today.
Our Take
Modern Warfare 4 is a good game, and a franchise that has been around for 24 years clearly knows how to make them. Still, for me, history has shown that nothing really changes with every season and every new release. Even here, Modern Warfare 3 and 4 look pretty much the same.
That said, the gameplay is really good and well optimized, and it runs great even on a modest PC. What has worn me out lately is how fast the game is. You just can't play more than 2 hours straight.
I'll try it once it hits Game Pass, so I can have a real opinion. Please let us know when it comes to Game Pass.

Older games still sell
Older games are also pulling their weight. Activision brought the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to modern PlayStation hardware in July. Alinea Analytics estimated that Black Ops 2 sold around 8.2 million copies that month, while Black Ops added another 3 million. Those are analyst estimates and not figures Activision confirmed, but they put Black Ops 2 among the 10 best-selling games of 2026 in the US months after release.
What the number leaves out
Microsoft has not said how much of the total comes from premium game sales versus Warzone, Call of Duty Mobile, DLC, battle passes or other in-game purchases. It has also yet to announce official sales numbers for the latest release. So the milestone is a franchise total only, with no split by revenue source, even though the figure is still growing at a rapid pace.
What players can check
Players can look at Steam reviews for a sense of how the new game landed. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign briefly reached a 94% positive rating during early access, while the full release currently sits around 77% positive among English-language reviews. Modern Warfare 4 launched in October after a rougher patch for Call of Duty, and Infinity Ward returned to a more traditional cinematic campaign alongside multiplayer and DMZ.
When Modern Warfare 4 comes to Game Pass
Modern Warfare 4 is not part of Game Pass at launch. Activision confirmed on October 15 that the game launched on October 23 as a standalone release, so you have to buy it, and that it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. There is no exact date yet. Game Pass Ultimate members still have Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III, which stay in the service. We will update this article as soon as Activision gives a date.
