2K Opens Small Axe Studios for a New AAA Sports Game

2K has opened Small Axe Studios in Vancouver to build an unannounced AAA sports franchise led by former FIFA executive Aaron McHardy.

2K Opens Small Axe Studios for a New AAA Sports Game

2K has officially introduced Small Axe Studios, a new AAA development team based in Vancouver and focused on creating the publisher’s next major sports franchise.

The studio is led by Aaron McHardy, who serves as vice president, executive producer and studio head. McHardy brings extensive experience from EA Sports, where he worked on major franchises including FIFA and Madden.

A New AAA Sports Team

2K says Small Axe Studios will combine the focus and flexibility of a startup with the resources of a major publisher.

The studio’s mission is to develop what 2K describes as its next blockbuster sports franchise. An official 2K recruitment listing now includes Small Axe Studios alongside established teams such as Visual Concepts, Firaxis, Hangar 13, Cloud Chamber and HB Studios.

Small Axe Studios is also recruiting developers for several important roles, suggesting that full production is still taking shape.

Why Aaron McHardy Matters

McHardy spent more than 15 years at Electronic Arts and held senior positions within EA Sports. His previous work includes FIFA 17, FIFA 18 and Madden.

That experience has naturally created speculation that Small Axe could be developing a football game. However, 2K has not confirmed the sport, title or licensed competition involved.

There is currently no evidence that the project is connected to FIFA or that it will compete directly with EA Sports FC.

What Remains Unknown

2K has not announced the game’s platforms, release date, business model or official name. No trailer, screenshots or gameplay details have been released.

The publisher has described the project as an investment in new intellectual property. This suggests that Small Axe may be creating an original sports franchise, although further details are still being kept secret.

For now, the most important confirmed detail is that 2K is expanding its sports portfolio with an experienced team. Any claims about football, FIFA licensing or a release window remain speculation.
