GameStop has raised the price of used and refurbished PS5 Pro consoles in the US to 1,399.99 US dollars. That is about 500 US dollars more than Sony’s own price for a brand new PS5 Pro, which has been 899.99 US dollars since April 2, 2026.
What GameStop changed
An internal GameStop memo, first shared on Reddit on October 5 and reported by Kotaku and TechSpot, says the new prices for used and refurbished PS5 Pro units started on October 6. Depending on the version, they run from 1,400 to 1,500 US dollars, and the memo reportedly calls the gap with new consoles intentional.
On October 6, GameStop’s website listed a standard used PS5 Pro at 1,399.99 US dollars, while a new PS5 Pro was still listed at Sony’s price. Both were out of stock that morning, and GameStop had not explained the change when the reports went out.
Why used consoles cost more right now
New PS5 Pro stock is thin. According to TechSpot, new units are sold out at most US online stores, including Sony’s own store, and listings on Best Buy, Walmart and Newegg ask about 1,495 to 1,585 US dollars for a new one. Demand is also climbing ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
PS5 prices in the US right now
| Console | Price |
|---|---|
| PS5 Pro, new (Sony price) | 899.99 US dollars |
| PS5 Pro, used or refurbished at GameStop | 1,399.99 US dollars |
| PS5 Pro, new from other sellers | about 1,495 to 1,585 US dollars |
| PS5 with disc drive | 649.99 US dollars |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 599.99 US dollars |
Sony’s prices in the table come from its April 2, 2026 price change, when the PS5 Pro moved to 899.99 US dollars in the US.
Our Take
This is unacceptable to me. GameStop is now asking 1,399.99 US dollars for a used or refurbished PS5 Pro, about 500 US dollars more than the 899.99 US dollars Sony charges for a brand new one.
For this to stop, nobody should buy. Unacceptable!

What it means for players
If you want a PS5 Pro before GTA VI arrives, waiting for a restock at 899.99 US dollars from Sony or a major retailer saves about 500 US dollars compared with GameStop’s used price. GTA VI is a PS5 game, so a standard PS5 at 649.99 US dollars, or the Digital Edition at 599.99, runs it too. Planning to trade in an older console toward a used Pro? Check the offer first, since Kotaku notes that GameStop’s trade in credit can sit well below what the hardware is worth.
