Ask any longtime MMO player what they want next and two names keep coming back: World of Warcraft 2 and Lineage 3, the long awaited successor to Lineage II. Neither has been confirmed. We think there is a reason for the silence, and we believe that when one of them finally arrives, it has to arrive done right.

WoW 2: Blizzard says Forever is the answer

At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard did not announce a sequel. It announced World of Warcraft: Forever, a third version of the game that sits next to Modern and Classic and launches on November 4. Blizzard says it is not sure what a true WoW 2 would give players that Forever does not already give them. Players are not fully convinced, and on Reddit and the official forums many beta testers keep calling Forever “WoW 2” anyway.

Lineage 3: the sequel that never really happened

Lineage 3 was meant to follow Lineage II, and for years fans were told it had arrived. First it was TERA, built by former Lineage 3 developers who left NCSoft for Bluehole and were later convicted in Korea of taking trade secrets. Then it was Lineage Eternal, which became Throne and Liberty, a game set in a brand new world called Solisium. Then it was the mobile Lineage games, such as Lineage W, which NCSoft itself called “the final Lineage.” In our opinion, none of these is Lineage 3.

Many of the people behind Lineage II are gone too. The Lineage 3 lead left in 2007, and Lineage II designer Hyung Jin Kim has moved on, although producer Bae Jae Hyun has stayed with NC for more than 20 years. NC is hiring for Project NL, a new Lineage MMO on Unreal Engine 5, but it has no title, no date, and no proof that it will be a true sequel.

What the community is saying

On the WoW side, GamesRadar reported on September 21 that fans on X, Reddit and the official forums say Forever already is WoW 2, even though Blizzard says it is not a sequel. A September 15 thread on the official forums argues that Forever feels like WoW 2.0, and the replies are split. Some call it a midpoint between Retail and Classic, others a high resolution version of the past, and supporters see a reset after Blizzard lost its way.

The Lineage conversation is smaller and more divided. In April 2024, Mein MMO covered a Reddit review by a player called msonix who said Throne and Liberty plays like a modern Lineage 3, despite the grind and chaotic fortress sieges. A small 2023 Steam thread called it a disappointing successor, citing automatic hunting and bots. We still do not count it as Lineage 3, but the split shows how much fans want a real answer.

Players are starving for a real MMO

The demand is obvious. Throne and Liberty, despite mixed reviews, passed 336,000 concurrent players on Steam in its first week. The WoW Forever beta opened with around 17,000 players in queue, and a Blizzard developer called it the craziest numbers he had seen in 17 years at Blizzard. Almost every decent MMO launch fills its servers and builds queues.

That is why we do not see the silence as a bad sign. A rushed WoW 2 or a fake Lineage 3 would burn that goodwill in weeks. Fans have waited this long. They can wait for the real thing.
