RTX 3080 10GB or RTX 5060 8GB Which GPU Is the Better Buy?

The RTX 3080 wins in raw gaming speed, while the RTX 5060 offers DLSS 4, lower power use and a warranty. Here is the smarter buy in 2026.

RTX 3080 10GB or RTX 5060 8GB Which GPU Is the Better Buy?

Buying a newer graphics card does not always mean getting better gaming performance. The RTX 5060 arrived almost five years after the RTX 3080, but current benchmark data shows that the older card remains considerably faster in native gaming.

In the latest 2026 GPU tests from Tom’s Hardware, the RTX 3080 averaged 111.6 FPS at 1080p and 82.0 FPS at 1440p. The RTX 5060 averaged 88.5 FPS and 59.8 FPS at the same resolutions.

That gives the RTX 3080 an advantage of approximately 26 percent at 1080p and 37 percent at 1440p. These results use native raster rendering with high settings and do not include DLSS or frame generation.

The official specifications tell two different stories

NVIDIA launched the RTX 3080 in September 2020 with 8,704 CUDA cores, 10 GB of GDDR6X memory, a 320 bit memory interface and 760 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

The RTX 5060 arrived in May 2025 with 3,840 CUDA cores, 8 GB of GDDR7 memory, a 128 bit interface and 448 GB/s of bandwidth.

Some comparison images incorrectly list the RTX 5060 at 480 GB/s. NVIDIA’s official specification is 448 GB/s.

CUDA core counts should not be compared directly between different architectures. However, the RTX 3080 has a much wider memory interface and considerably more raw rendering power.

The biggest disadvantage is power consumption. The RTX 3080 is rated at 320W and NVIDIA recommends a 750W system power supply. The RTX 5060 is rated at only 145W and has a recommended system power of 550W.

Current prices completely change the comparison

The RTX 5060 launched with an official MSRP of $299. That number no longer represents the current US market.

In August 2026, the median RTX 5060 price across Newegg listings reached approximately $470. This was around 27 percent higher than the June median price.

Used RTX 3080 10GB cards currently have a US market average close to $360, with a typical fair price between $344 and $374. Recent European completed sales have also placed the card close to €330, although prices vary by country, model and condition.

This means that a used RTX 3080 priced near $350 or €330 can offer considerably more raw gaming performance than a new RTX 5060. A used RTX 3080 priced close to $500 is much harder to recommend.

Why the RTX 3080 is still the faster gaming card

The RTX 3080 is the stronger choice for players who want higher native performance at 1440p. Its wider memory interface, higher bandwidth and 10 GB of VRAM help it maintain a significant advantage over the RTX 5060.

It can also provide better performance in games that do not support DLSS 4 or Multi Frame Generation.

However, buyers must account for its heat, power consumption and physical size. A quality power supply, good case airflow and sufficient space are essential.

The card will also be used, which introduces risks that do not exist with a new product and full retail warranty.

Why the RTX 5060 can still make sense

The RTX 5060 consumes less than half the power of the RTX 3080. It produces less heat, works with more affordable power supplies and is easier to install inside compact gaming systems.

It also supports DLSS 4, Multi Frame Generation, newer ray tracing hardware and AV1 video encoding. These features can be valuable for supported games, streaming and video production.

The main concern is its 8 GB of VRAM. This can restrict maximum texture settings and ray tracing performance in demanding modern games, especially at 1440p.

NVIDIA itself positions the RTX 5060 primarily as a 1080p graphics card and recommends a faster RTX 50 Series model for players using a 1440p or higher resolution monitor.

Multi Frame Generation can produce much higher displayed frame rates, but it works best when the card already has a healthy native frame rate. It cannot completely replace stronger raw performance.

What to check before buying a used RTX 3080

Ask the seller to run a demanding game or stress test before completing the purchase. Watch for visual artifacts, crashes, excessive temperatures and unusual fan noise.

Inspect the power connectors, fans, heatsink and physical condition. Confirm that the card has not been repaired and ask for the original receipt when available.

Make sure your case has enough space and that your power supply is a reliable model with sufficient capacity.

A used card without a return option should always cost less than one sold by a professional retailer with testing and warranty coverage.

GamingBroject verdict

At approximately $350 or €330, a healthy RTX 3080 10GB is the better choice for raw 1440p gaming performance. It is considerably faster than the RTX 5060 and currently offers stronger performance for the money.

The RTX 5060 is the safer choice for a new 1080p system when low power consumption, warranty coverage, DLSS 4 and modern video features matter more than native performance.

At its original $299 price, the RTX 5060 can make sense. At a current US median close to $470, its value becomes much more difficult to defend against a properly tested used RTX 3080.

Neither card is perfect for a long term maximum settings 1440p system. Buyers with a larger budget should also consider modern alternatives with at least 12 GB or 16 GB of VRAM.

Which would you choose: the raw performance of a used RTX 3080 or the efficiency and modern features of a new RTX 5060?
