An owner of a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5090 AORUS MASTER ICE reportedly found heat damage around the GPU’s 16 pin power connector, despite modifying the case to give the cable more clearance.
According to VideoCardz, the system used a Goghunters Fire F12 1200W power supply. The owner said the graphics card was running at stock settings and had been used for roughly four to five months.
The side panel had been modified with an opening directly beside the connector. This allowed the cable to leave the graphics card without being sharply bent or pressed against the case.
Despite that precaution, photos shared by the owner showed visible heat damage around the GPU side of the connection. The problem was reportedly discovered before complete failure, and the card was still operating.
The owner blamed the power cable. However, no independent inspection has confirmed whether the cable, power supply, GPU socket, installation or another factor caused the overheating.

NVIDIA lists a 575W total graphics power rating for the RTX 5090 reference design. The company’s official installation guide tells users to insert the connector firmly and confirm that it is seated completely flush with the GPU socket. Power requirements for partner cards may differ.
Creating extra space around the cable is still a sensible precaution because it reduces pressure near the connector. This incident shows, however, that cable clearance alone cannot confirm that the electrical connection is safe.
This remains one reported case. It is not evidence that every RTX 5090 has the same problem. Anyone who notices discoloration, unusual heat, instability or a burning smell should stop using the system and contact the GPU and power supply manufacturers.
