Discord Is Testing Larger File Uploads, But No Date Yet

Discord is testing larger file upload limits, but the company has not announced a date for a major upgrade across all users.

The platform’s latest File Attachments FAQ was updated on August 13, 2026. It now states that users without Nitro can upload files up to 20 MB. The same page also says that Discord is experimenting with different upload limits and that selected users may already have access to larger file sizes.

This confirms that Discord is actively testing changes to file sharing. However, it does not confirm that a large new limit is coming to every account soon.

What Discord Has Confirmed

Discord’s latest support page says that non Nitro users currently have a maximum file upload size of 20 MB.

It also confirms that selected users may be included in experiments with larger upload sizes. Discord does not explain how users are selected, how large the experimental limits are, or when the testing will end.

The company has not announced a universal upgrade date, a new free limit for every account or a move to 1 GB uploads.

Why Are Discord’s Numbers Different?

Discord’s official documentation is not fully synchronized.

The newer File Attachments FAQ lists 20 MB for non Nitro users. However, Discord’s account limits page, updated in March 2026, still lists the standard account limit as 10 MB.

That same limits page lists 50 MB for Nitro Basic and 500 MB for Nitro. Discord’s current Nitro information page also confirms 50 MB for Nitro Basic and up to 500 MB for Nitro subscribers.

The difference between the official pages suggests that Discord is updating its file upload system gradually, or that some limits are being tested before the documentation is updated everywhere. This is an inference based on the different official pages, not a separate announcement from Discord.

Current Upload Limits

Nitro Basic supports uploads up to 50 MB.

Nitro supports uploads up to 500 MB.

Server boosts can also affect upload limits. Discord’s account limits page lists 50 MB for all members on Level 2 boosted servers and 100 MB for all members on Level 3 boosted servers.

These limits can change while Discord continues its experiments, so the upload message shown inside the Discord app is the best way to confirm the limit on a specific account or server.

Is a Major Upgrade Coming Soon?

Discord has not confirmed a final date for a larger global upload limit.

The wording used in the latest FAQ confirms active testing, but it does not promise that the experiment will become a permanent feature for everyone. It is also unclear whether Discord will increase the free limit, expand Nitro benefits, or introduce different limits depending on the account, server or file type.

For now, users should not treat online claims about a future 1 GB limit or a specific launch date as confirmed information.

What Should Discord Users Do Now?

If you cannot upload a file, check the size shown in the error message and compare it with your account or server limit.

Users who regularly share large videos, project files or high resolution images can use Nitro Basic for the 50 MB limit or Nitro for uploads up to 500 MB. Free users should keep files below the currently displayed limit or use a trusted external storage service when appropriate.

Discord is clearly testing changes to file uploads, but the platform has not yet announced a single new limit for everyone. The confirmed news is that the system is being tested and that some users may already see higher limits.
