Final Fantasy Resonance launches Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, and it is the first Final Fantasy built in the HD-2D style. It arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC at the same time, starting at 49.99 US dollars. Here are the 10 things worth knowing before you spend your money.

1. It is the first HD-2D Final Fantasy

Square Enix calls Final Fantasy Resonance the first HD-2D game in the series. Pixel art characters move through detailed 3D worlds with dynamic camera angles, a style Square Enix has used in other RPGs. It is developed by Square Enix and Lancarse and published by Square Enix.

2. It is a rebuilt Brave Exvius story

The game adapts the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but Square Enix says it is far from just a direct port. It has been rebuilt as a console quality RPG. You travel with Rain, Lasswell and Fina, with companions bound by fate and a force that threatens to ruin everything.

3. The price and the editions

The standard edition costs 49.99 US dollars. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs 59.99 US dollars and adds the Magitek Armor Key (a magitek look for your chocobo), the Archwitch’s Grimoire (it unlocks a character’s Fel Meteor Limit Burst), a Mastery Ring and a stack of consumables. The Grimoire is the only gameplay unlock in the pack, which makes the upgrade optional for most players. A physical Collector’s Edition at 209.99 US dollars was also announced, with an artbook, a soundtrack and a Final Fantasy TCG promo card.

4. Preorder and early purchase bonuses

Preorders include the Magitek Airship and Squire Starter Pack: an airship skin, the Knight’s Greatsword, the Chestplate of Preparation, a Magicite Shard, three Tents and three Mist Potions. If you buy after the preorder window, the Squire Kickstart Pack (a Blessed Cuirass and a Mist Ether) is still available on Steam for purchases made by Nov. 6, 2026, at 8:59 a.m. Pacific time. Both packs are claimed from the postbox in front of the inn in the Town of Mitra. Waiting a few days only costs you the preorder pack.

5. A free demo is already out

A free demo is available on every platform. It covers the opening through the end of the first chapter in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, roughly 3 to 5 hours of play, and your save data carries over to the full game. If you are on the fence, this is the cheapest way to decide. We covered the demo launch here: Final Fantasy Resonance PS5 demo available today, Sephiroth revealed.

6. The first review score is high

Famitsu scored the game 36 out of 40, with 9 from each of its four reviewers, as relayed by Push Square and Nintendo Life. The same reports put the main story at about 20 to 30 hours and full completion at about 70 hours. English language reviews were not out yet when this was written, and Metacritic had no Metascore yet. Treat it as a strong early signal, not a final verdict.

7. Combat is turn based, with a stagger system

Battles are turn based. Exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, earn extra turns and use Resonance attacks. Visions, echoes of classic Final Fantasy characters, fight alongside you, and Cloud is one of them. Chocobos, espers and airships all return.

8. Sephiroth, Gilgamesh and plenty of side content

Sephiroth is in the game as an optional fight: find him, beat him and earn a special reward. The Steam page also lists the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and an Ultima Weapon showdown. Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light are confirmed as part of the crossover cast.

9. How it runs on each platform

RPG Site tested the demo across several devices. The PS5 Pro ran flawlessly with almost no load times. The Switch 2 targets 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked mode, with no major slowdowns over about an hour. A ROG Ally at 1080p and 25 watts averaged around 100 frames per second, and the Steam Deck stayed mostly above 60 on the High preset, with dips into the 50s during heavy spell effects. The original Switch targets 30 frames per second and drops below that in some areas and cutscenes. These are demo results, so the final game may differ.

10. PC requirements and download sizes

GPURX 6400, Arc A580 or GTX 1650RX 5500 XT, Arc A580 or GTX 1650
RAM8 GB8 GB
Storage15 GB15 GB

Reported download sizes are about 11.9 GB on PS5, about 14 GB on Xbox Series X|S, 12.7 GB on Switch 2 and 8.8 GB on Switch. Only the PS5 figure comes from a listing, so treat the others as estimates.

Should you buy it now or wait?

If the demo hooked you, or you grew up on the early Final Fantasy games, launch day makes sense, and a preorder gets you the starter pack. If you are unsure, play the free demo first and wait for English reviews. Waiting costs you only the preorder pack, because the Kickstart Pack stays available through Nov. 6.
