S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Adds Squad Leader Fast Travel

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl gets its first major update after 2.0, adding fast travel with squad leaders and an A-Life NPC distance option.

Anomalies and streaming distance

Anomalies get a round of changes. The notes list improvements to how anomalies work with new systems, including streaming distance, dead body interactions and visual improvements for the CNPP arch-anomaly. The audible range of gunfights now follows the streaming distance setting, and the identification range for the binoculars grows when the increased A-Life streaming distance is used. The visual effects of some anomalies also no longer freeze at a distance, which should make far-off hazards look right when players scan the horizon.

NPC and combat behavior

A long block of fixes targets enemy and ally behavior. Armed NPCs no longer aim in unintended directions, and NPCs that would not attack the player when not directly looked at now do. The notes also cover an excessive spawn of mercenary NPCs at the Duga location and massive NPCs or mutants spawning at the Rostok location. NPCs could also get stuck inside campfires, and covers received extra internal height, which should improve AI behavior around small covers. The Amok Run attack also triggers more reliably when started out of line of sight.

PS5 missing character fixes

PlayStation 5 players get a dedicated set of corrections. The notes fix the missing NPCs on the PS5 platform after the update to the 2.0 patch. Specific cases include Varan missing during the Deal With The Devil mission and Zotov missing during the Once More Unto The Breach mission. Further entries cover Squint, Sava, Scar and his squad, Shcherba, Doctor Kaimanov and Star. Dead bodies carrying quest items or a basement key could also go missing on PS5 in the Deal With The Devil and Chasing Ghosts missions, and both are addressed.

Our Take

The new options matter less than what they say about priorities. Fast travel with squad leaders and a longer A-Life distance add features, but most of the notes go to broken NPCs, stuck bodies and missing PS5 characters. For players who stalled after the 2.0 patch, especially on PlayStation 5, this is the update to check first. We would watch whether the next patch keeps this pace of fixes or goes back to new content.

Mission, boss and visual fixes

Quest and presentation problems fill much of the rest. The starting missions of the DLC could not be started, and that is now fixed. Collision issues in the Zulu bossfight area are corrected, and the notes address performance drops during the To the origins of Freedom mission at the Perimeter Dam location. Players could also navigate outside the map during the Wishful Thinking mission, which the update closes off. Hair rendering gets repeated attention, with fixes for Richter, Agatha, Mavka and the Doctor in various missions and cutscenes.
