Nintendo is not currently planning to abandon physical games. That is the reassuring message from Bill van Zyll, the company’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, in an interview with Brazilian creator Coelho no Japão.
TheGamer’s October 12 report, following Nintendo Everything’s coverage, attributes the remarks to the original interview. Van Zyll described Nintendo’s approach as responding to consumer preferences and keeping both physical and digital options.
A current position, not a forever guarantee
The distinction matters: having no current plans to stop is not the same as promising every future game will contain its complete data on a cartridge. Nor is this a dated announcement of a new game or a permanent commitment covering every third-party publisher.
Physical does not always mean the same thing
Nintendo’s own support guide separates regular Switch 2 game cards from game-key cards. A game-key card requires an initial download, enough storage and the card inserted when you play. After the initial setup, a game can start offline, although online-only features still have their own requirements.
A game-key card is also different from a one-use download code. Nintendo explains that it is not tied to your Nintendo Account and can be lent to somebody else. Their console still needs to download the game, and the card must remain inserted to play. That preserves a form of sharing without putting the full game data on the card.
Before purchasing a boxed Switch 2 release, inspect the packaging and the product’s download requirements. A shelf-ready case, an eShop purchase and a cartridge containing the game are not interchangeable formats.
This is industry-format news concerning Nintendo’s ecosystem. There is no relevant game release day or U.S. launch hour to add.
