Squadron 42 now has a Steam page, and you can add Cloud Imperium Games’ single player Star Citizen campaign to your wishlist. The page lists the release window as the second quarter of 2027, and it arrives with a new wishlist trailer called “The Oath”.
Why it is coming in 2027
The window matches what Chris Roberts, CEO and cofounder of Cloud Imperium Games, announced on August 31 in a “Letter From The Chairman” on the Roberts Space Industries site. Squadron 42 had been aimed at 2026, a window first given at CitizenCon 2024, but Roberts moved it to the second quarter of 2027 because he did not want to launch it into the attention around Grand Theft Auto 6. He added that a specific release date would follow.
Our Take
Space battles across the galaxy sound interesting to me, and I like that Squadron 42 is a single player game. That's a good thing in my book, and it's nice to see a proper story campaign get its own Steam page.
But look at what's behind the new window. Everybody is scared of GTA 6, so everybody changes their date! Cloud Imperium aimed this one at 2026, and now Chris Roberts has moved it to the second quarter of 2027 because he didn't want to launch into the attention around GTA 6. It's almost funny how one game can make everyone else move their calendar.
Still, the Steam page, the system requirements and the 150 GB install size tell me it's getting closer. Roberts says a specific release date will follow, so we'll see.

What the Steam page shows
The listing includes PC system requirements and a 150 GB install size. PC Gamer points out that the requirements do not mention a ray tracing graphics card or DirectX 12.
Squadron 42 is a story campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, starting during the events of Vega II in 2945. Its cast includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Rhona Mitra and Liam Cunningham.

Early play sessions for backers
In the same August letter, Roberts said some backers and longtime Star Citizen content creators would be able to play Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10.
What it means for players
A Steam page with system requirements is the most concrete sign yet that Squadron 42 is close. The window is still a quarter rather than a day, so wishlist it if you are interested and wait for the exact date Roberts has promised before planning around it.
This article is based on the Squadron 42 Steam page, Chris Roberts’ letter of August 31, 2026 and reporting from PC Gamer and Mezha.
