Creative Assembly and Sega posted the first Q&A video for Alien: Isolation 2, and it fills in plenty of gaps about the sequel. The studio has not announced a release date yet, so the video is the main source of new information for now. Senior game designer Noélie Prost and lead game designer James Green both spoke about how the follow-up differs from the first game, especially when it comes to the creature that hunts the player.

Story and setting

GamingBolt adds that the story is set on Kurosaki several months after the events of the first game. A new protagonist, Blake, discovers a Xenomorph and has to struggle for survival. Players will travel through different locations on the planet, including a settlement packed with other humans. That is a clear change from the original, which kept the player locked inside one station for the whole campaign.

Bigger outdoor spaces

One report credits Prost with saying the sequel has spaces that are maybe ten times bigger than the first game, while GamesRadar+ attributes the same figure to art director Ana Sopikova. The first game takes place entirely inside the Sevastopol space station, but the sequel adds outdoor sequences where weather such as rain and hail creates its own challenges. Prost explained that the team had to make the creature work in exteriors, since the original only ever used small corridors.

A Xenomorph that adapts

Green said the creature will not stop hunting players once they step outdoors. It uses the fact that exteriors are exposed to hunt more aggressively, and it will use weather to hide its movements. He also said the alien changes its behavior with each encounter, so a trick that worked last time will not simply work again, indoors or outside. Prost added that the creature reacts to the player better and to all the new items, gadgets and tools.

Mic detection and Photo Mode

A microphone feature has been built for the sequel. When asked in the Q&A whether the alien will pick up noises through a player's microphone, the developers confirmed that the feature will pick up those noises and alert NPCs to the player's presence, including the Xenomorph. The game also gets a new Photo Mode, so players can try to snap shots of the creature or frame it against the stark landscape of Kurosaki.

Our Take

The developers are pitching a sequel that changes the rules of the original rather than repeating it. A Xenomorph that learns from each encounter and hunts outside in the weather could make old stealth habits useless, which is the right risk for this series. In our view the mic feature is the part to watch, because it only works if it feels fair to players. Without a release date, though, all of this remains a promise.
