Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028 has sparked a major debate. The company points to buyers’ shift toward digital editions. For many players, however, discs still matter: they let us compare prices between stores, lend games to friends, or resell them when we’re done. Games already released, or scheduled for a disc release before 2028, are unaffected.
The reaction has gone beyond broad arguments about PlayStation’s future. Comments about the decision have even appeared under promotional material for Marvel’s Wolverine, one of Sony’s major exclusives. That doesn’t mean every negative comment is about discs, or that all criticism of the game stems from Sony’s decision. It does show that some players’ frustration now follows the company into its announcements for new games.

In August, that frustration also took an organized form. Under the #PSBlackout banner, players called on other PlayStation owners to avoid using their consoles and making purchases for a week, from August 23 to 30. The call circulated on social media with the aim of putting pressure on Sony. There are no verified figures, however, showing how many people took part or whether it affected sales.
Another development feeding the discussion is a report that Sony sent a survey to partner developers asking, among other things, for their views on releasing games physically. If confirmed, this would show that Sony is gathering feedback from its partners. It would not, by itself, prove that the company has decided to reconsider its 2028 plan.
There is a personal side to this story as well. Collectors will no longer be able to add new disc releases to their physical libraries. For many of us, browsing a game store, looking at the boxes on the shelves, and unwrapping a new game are memories closely tied to PlayStation. A fully digital future for new releases would bring that experience to an end.
The question now is whether Sony will stand by its decision, and what that will mean for players who still want the choice between a physical copy and a digital one.
