Release on Switch 2
Red Barrels has released The Outlast Trials on Nintendo Switch 2, with the cooperative survival horror game arriving through the Nintendo eShop, Gematsu reports. Pocket Tactics describes it as a shadow drop and says the game is on the handheld right now. The release brings Red Barrels' psychological horror experience to Nintendo's newer console, where players can take Murkoff's twisted experiments on the go. The game itself first released in 2024.
Premise of the Trials
The game is set during the Cold War. Players are abducted by the Murkoff Corporation and forced into unethical experiments involving brainwashing and mind control. Red Barrels' own overview says human guinea pigs are recruited against their will to test advanced methods of those practices. The goal is to survive the Trials and complete the supposed therapy, though Murkoff's idea of treatment leaves quite a bit to be desired, according to Pocket Tactics.
Solo or team play
Players can face the experiments alone or team up with friends. Red Barrels says the prisoners are all trapped inside the Murkoff facility, and that players can complete the trials by themselves or tackle them in a team of two, three or four players. Pocket Tactics notes that things do not get any less disturbing with company, so a bigger group does not make the facility safer.
Hide, run and use tools
Fighting is not the best option in this game. Red Barrels describes the core gameplay as avoiding enemies, hiding from them and trying to run away. Murkoff provides tools that increase stealth, create opportunities to flee and slow down enemies. Those tools are not handed over for free, though, because players have to earn them and work hard to improve them. Pocket Tactics adds that running when things get dangerous is part of the plan.
Customization and the cell
Between Trials, players choose tools, upgrades and perks to fit their playstyle, and they can create and customize their own trial patient. The cell serves as a home during the therapy and can be decorated however the player wishes. Red Barrels also lists an Investigate element, where players collect documents and items that help prove Murkoff's malpractice against its patients.
Storage and online needs
Anyone planning to play should check free space first. The eShop listing puts the Nintendo Switch 2 download at 46GB, Pocket Tactics reports, so players need enough storage before getting started. Online play on the console requires Nintendo Switch Online, which matters for anyone who wants to team up with friends. Solo runs are an option for those who prefer to face the Trials alone.

Our Take
A 46GB download and a Nintendo Switch Online requirement make this a real commitment for Switch 2 owners, especially for a game built around teaming up. We think anyone who wants the full co-op experience should count both before buying. The solo option is the safer way to test the dread first, and the team of up to four is where this port will prove itself in our eyes.
