Minecraft is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, and players who own the digital Switch version can upgrade to the Standard Edition for free.
What the Switch 2 version adds
Nintendo announced that Minecraft is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, with the new visual features built in. The support covers the Nintendo exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and other enabled content across Minecraft Marketplace. Nintendo says this means improved visual elements such as directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows, and more. The post does not detail every effect beyond those it names, so players will see the full picture only once they load the game on the new console.
Free upgrade for digital owners
Players who already own a digital copy of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch can move up at no cost. They can upgrade to the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 for free. Nintendo notes that the offer is available through the Nintendo eShop only, so the upgrade has to be claimed there. The free offer is described only for digital copies, and owners of a physical version have a different route, covered in the next section.
Discount window for all Switch players
Every Minecraft owner on Switch, including those with a physical version, gets a discounted route to the biggest edition. Launching Minecraft for Nintendo Switch on a Nintendo Switch 2 between October 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. PT and January 31, 2027 at 9 a.m. PT triggers an in-game message. That message invites players to upgrade to digital Minecraft: ULTIMATE COLLECTION for Nintendo Switch 2 at a discount. Nintendo does not state the discounted price in its post.
Worlds, limits and Minecoins
Saves are not left behind. Nintendo says all previous Minecraft players on Nintendo Switch can carry their worlds over to Nintendo Switch 2 and pick up where they left off, whichever edition they choose. The new visual features have limits, though: they are not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and when using certain Marketplace Worlds and content. Minecoins included in an edition, and any Minecoins bought on a Nintendo device, must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem.
Our Take
The free Standard Edition upgrade is the easy part. The discounted Ultimate Collection offer is the one to watch, because Nintendo has not said how deep the discount goes and the window closes at the end of January 2027. Players who own a physical copy should read the in-game message carefully before spending anything. We also see the split-screen limits as a real trade-off for families who play together on one console.

Platforms and release
Minecraft is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, sold digitally as the Standard Edition, the Deluxe Collection or the Ultimate Collection. The Standard Edition is the game players already know, now enhanced for the console, and it includes the new visual features and the Super Mario Mashup. The Deluxe Collection has everything in the Standard Edition plus extra content, and the Ultimate Collection has everything in the Deluxe Collection plus more. Nintendo's post does not list prices for any of the editions.
