The Long Dark is getting a train. IRON ROAD, a new Survival Mode expansion from Hinterland Studio, launches in Steam Early Access on October 27, 2026, and it drops you on Cauldron Island, a flooded volcanic caldera with more than 100 kilometers of railway and a century old locomotive you have to bring back to life.
This is paid DLC, and you need the base game. It’s also the first time Hinterland has put a Long Dark expansion into Early Access, which means you’re buying a fraction of the finished thing and watching the rest arrive over the next 18 to 24 months.
What’s actually in IRON ROAD
The hook is the Prototype Train. You restore it, upgrade it at Repair Bays along the track, and ride it along the caldera’s spine. It doubles as a mobile shelter, which is a big deal in a game where finding a safe roof is usually the whole problem. The story follows the failed whale oil empire of industrialist Hamish McLeod, told through wax cylinder recordings you find along the way.
| Feature | At Early Access launch | Full plan |
|---|---|---|
| Islands | Anna Island | 5 islands named after McLeod’s daughters |
| Railway | About 30 km | More than 100 km |
| Train | First Prototype Train | More train content and upgrades |
| Story items | 16 Wax Cylinders | More narrative content |
You reach Cauldron Island from Great Bear Island on the Fulmar, an autopilot boat that runs from Desolation Point to Port Remnant. Hinterland also lists harpoon hunting, new clothing and food, Aurora effects and new safehouse items. The roadmap aims for small updates every month and large ones every quarter, and Hinterland says it expects at least one price increase before version 1.0.
The train idea isn’t new to longtime players. Hinterland built one for the story mode’s Episode Five and says players liked it enough to build an expansion around it. The studio first planned an episodic release like Tales from the Far Territory, then switched to Early Access after talking with Valve. Back in August, Hinterland also said it was moving a small team off its next game, Blackfrost, to work on Long Dark DLC.

What players are saying
On The Long Dark’s Steam forums, the train and the new island are getting a warm welcome, with players excited about landslides, geothermal zones and the Aurora changes. The pushback is about the label. Several players asked why a DLC needs to be Early Access at all, when Hinterland could ship it and patch it like any other update. Hinterland’s August dev diary had already stirred debate there about the planned paid DLCs and a possible price increase for Survival Mode, and IRON ROAD’s price still isn’t public. Hinterland’s own dev diary says more Survival Mode fixes and improvements are coming before the end of the year.
Our take
A train you can live in is exactly the kind of idea The Long Dark needs after years of walking between the same cabins. The Early Access structure is the catch. One island and 30 km of track at launch is a decent start, but the roadmap is long and Hinterland calls its own timeline “aspirational.” If you loved Tales from the Far Territory, this is probably an easy buy once the price is out. If you hate paying for unfinished content, wait for a couple of the large updates and the reviews.
Where to get it
IRON ROAD is on Steam only for now, and you can wishlist it there. You’ll need The Long Dark on Steam to play it. Hinterland hasn’t announced console, Epic Games Store or GOG versions of the DLC, even though the base game is on all of those. The full roadmap is on the official IRON ROAD page.
