An RPG That Won Me Over, Even Though I Don’t Usually Like Turn Based Combat
Overall score: 9/10
After spending about 80 hours with Octopath Traveler 0, I can honestly say the time flew by. The story, exploration, and, above all, its wonderful retro aesthetic won me over. The characters and locations are crafted with care, creating a world that recalls the eight bit era while retaining an identity of its own.

Here’s the pleasant surprise: I’m not usually a fan of turn based games. Yet I really enjoyed the combat here. The core mechanics are easy to learn, even if you don’t have much RPG experience. As you progress, you learn to make better use of your characters and feel yourself improving from one battle to the next.

Character development is one of the game’s strongest points. Each member has distinct skills and traits, so building a balanced party matters when you face tougher challenges, especially bosses. Hunting for items and taking on side quests also give you good reasons to explore beyond the main path. That time is well spent because exploration feeds meaningfully into your party’s growth and the story’s progression.

Square Enix knows RPGs well, with Final Fantasy among its series, and Octopath Traveler 0 reminded me why I enjoy losing myself in a carefully made world. I recommend it to people who love exploration and RPGs, but also to players who hesitate because of turn based combat. I was one of them, and I ended up enjoying this game more than most.
