Steam’s live chart shows CS2, Dota 2 and PUBG leading August 2026, while Palworld and two unusual desktop games enter the top ten right now.

Top 10 Most Played Steam Games in August 2026

What is everyone playing on PC this August?

A live snapshot of the SteamDB charts shows that competitive giants still dominate Steam. However, Palworld has made an impressive return, while two unusual desktop games have reached surprisingly high positions.

The numbers below were recorded on August 19, 2026, and represent concurrent Steam players. They can change significantly depending on the time of day and do not include players using consoles or other PC launchers.

The 10 Most Played Games on Steam Right Now

1. Counter-Strike 2

Current players: 631,221
24 hour peak: 1,192,016

Counter-Strike 2 remains Steam’s most played game. Its competitive ecosystem, esports scene and enormous international audience continue to keep it at the top, despite ongoing community complaints about cheating, bots and matchmaking.

2. Dota 2

Current players: 458,988
24 hour peak: 888,959

Dota 2 holds a comfortable second place. Interest surrounding The International 2026 and the constant discussion around heroes, team rosters and balance changes continue to generate strong activity.

3. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

Current players: 295,342
24 hour peak: 733,197

PUBG remains one of Steam’s biggest multiplayer games years after its original release. Its battle royale formula and strong global audience continue to produce huge daily peaks.

4. Palworld

Current players: 136,146
24 hour peak: 241,930

Palworld has returned to the upper section of the chart following its full release and recent content activity. Community discussions are already focused on what Pocketpair could add next, including new creatures, areas and endgame content.

5. Bongo Cat

Current players: 126,433
24 hour peak: 158,874

Bongo Cat is one of the most unusual entries. The free desktop companion reacts whenever users press a key and rewards them with points and cosmetic hats.

Its player count needs some context. Bongo Cat is designed to remain open while people work, browse or play something else, allowing it to accumulate enormous concurrent numbers.

6. Apex Legends

Current players: 116,328
24 hour peak: 267,391

Apex Legends continues to attract a major audience through seasonal content, competitive movement and its distinctive roster of Legends. Community discussion remains active around weapon balance, loot, matchmaking and recent updates.

7. TBH: Task Bar Hero

Current players: 88,548
24 hour peak: 115,706

TBH: Task Bar Hero is a small idle RPG designed to run directly on the Windows taskbar. The game automatically collects loot while other programs are being used.

Like Bongo Cat, its passive design helps explain why so many users can remain counted as active players for long periods.

8. FiveM

Current players: 72,783
24 hour peak: 178,765

FiveM is technically a multiplayer framework rather than a traditional standalone game. Its appearance in the chart represents the lasting popularity of custom Grand Theft Auto V servers, particularly roleplay communities.

9. Delta Force

Current players: 60,643
24 hour peak: 115,402

Delta Force continues to build a strong audience with its free military FPS experience. The combination of large combined arms battles and extraction based gameplay gives players two very different reasons to return.

10. Rust

Current players: 60,595
24 hour peak: 122,407

Rust completes the Top 10 with another strong daily performance. Regular updates, server wipes, unpredictable player encounters and its demanding survival systems continue to make every new start feel different.

What This Ranking Tells Us

Competitive multiplayer games remain Steam’s biggest attraction. Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and PUBG alone account for more than 1.3 million concurrent players in this snapshot.

Palworld’s position also shows how major updates can bring a large audience back. Meanwhile, Bongo Cat and TBH: Task Bar Hero demonstrate that concurrent player numbers do not always represent active matches. Some games are specifically designed to remain open in the background.

Reddit discussions show that players are still heavily engaged with updates, esports events and future content, even when conversations include criticism about cheating, matchmaking, balance or monetization.
