Microsoft’s latest Windows Insider updates combine an important maintenance warning with a series of changes designed to make Windows 11 cleaner, more reliable and less distracting.
The most urgent item concerns the flight certificates used to sign Windows Insider Preview builds. Microsoft confirmed that the previous certificate expired on August 11, 2026. Anyone still running an affected older Insider build should install the latest available update as soon as possible.
At the same time, Microsoft is testing a redesigned Windows Search experience that removes promotional content, gives local results higher priority and offers users more control over web and Microsoft Store suggestions.
Who is affected by the expired certificate?
The certificate warning only applies to computers enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. It does not affect standard retail installations of Windows 11, and it has no impact on Windows activation or a user’s license.
Flight certificates are used to sign preview builds and help Microsoft keep Insider devices on supported versions of Windows. Their renewal is routine maintenance rather than a response to a security incident.
Microsoft began distributing builds containing the renewed certificate before the deadline. Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 29634.1000, for example, included the new certificate for devices using the Experimental “Future Platforms” channel.
According to Microsoft’s certificate renewal guidance, the change also applies to other Insider branches, including Experimental and Beta configurations.
What should Windows Insiders do now?
Users running an Insider Preview build should open Settings, select Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Any available preview build should be installed, followed by the required restart.
The currently installed build can be checked by pressing Windows and R, entering “winver” and pressing Enter. The active Insider channel is available under Settings, Windows Update and Windows Insider Program.
Microsoft says devices that missed the deadline may display expiration notifications, while builds using the old certificate may stop following the normal preview update path. Installing the latest build carrying the renewed certificate should restore regular servicing.
This is normally handled as a standard Windows Update. A clean installation should not be required in most cases, and users are not expected to lose their files, applications or settings. Backing up important data before installing preview software is still recommended.
Windows Search is becoming less distracting
Microsoft is also gradually rolling out several improvements to the Windows Search Box for users in the Experimental channel.
The redesigned Search home screen has less visual clutter, while results more clearly identify whether an item is an application, setting, local file, web result or Microsoft Store suggestion.
Promotional content has been removed from web results, and a new option under Settings, Privacy & Security and Search allows users to decide whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions should appear alongside local content.
Windows should also prioritize applications, files and settings when they provide a better match than an online result. Additional improvements include better handling of typing mistakes, more useful file results, improved Settings rankings and greater Search reliability.
These changes are being distributed through a Controlled Feature Rollout, so not every Insider will receive them immediately. Microsoft also notes that availability may vary by region.
Part of Microsoft’s wider Windows quality push
The Search redesign is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to improve Windows 11 across performance, reliability and overall usability.
The company has outlined work targeting File Explorer responsiveness, lower system resource usage, improved driver and application stability, fewer disruptive updates and more control over distracting elements across Windows.
However, many of these features remain experimental. They may change, be delayed or never reach standard Windows 11 installations in their current form.
What this means for PC gamers
Gamers using a regular retail version of Windows 11 do not need to take any special action because of the expired Insider certificate.
Those running Insider builds on a gaming PC should update immediately and remember that preview software can introduce compatibility, performance or driver problems. An Insider build is best tested on a secondary system rather than a computer required for competitive gaming, streaming or daily work.
The cleaner Search interface is a welcome usability improvement, but Microsoft has not claimed that it will directly increase gaming performance. For now, the practical priority is simple: affected Insiders should install the latest available build and confirm that their system has returned to the normal update path.
