How to Claim Free PC Games on Epic Games Store and Steam

Claim legitimate free PC games, confirm they are in your library, and learn why a free weekend is not the same as a free-to-keep giveaway.

How to Claim Free PC Games on Epic Games Store and Steam

A free game is only a good deal if you understand what you are claiming. A giveaway can add a paid game to your account at no charge, while a free weekend may stop working when the event ends. Here is how to collect legitimate PC offers without confusing a temporary trial with a library entitlement.

First, identify the offer

  • Free-to-keep giveaway: claim the specified game or edition during the offer window. Epic’s official FAQ says claimed promotional games remain in your library after they stop being free to new customers.
  • Free weekend or trial: temporary access, not an automatic free copy. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes access that ends with the event.
  • Free-to-play: the base game is offered without a purchase price, but optional items, expansions or subscriptions may still cost money.

How to claim on Epic Games Store

  1. Open Epic’s official Free Games page, not a repost or an unfamiliar redemption site.
  2. Sign in to the Epic account you want to keep using. Check the account name before proceeding.
  3. Open the active giveaway and confirm the game, edition, PC platform, region availability and displayed deadline. Upcoming offers are not necessarily claimable yet.
  4. Select the claim or Get button. Complete any confirmation screen the store presents, checking that the total is free or 0 US dollars before accepting.
  5. Wait for the confirmation that the game is in your account. A wishlist entry or an unfinished claim is not enough.
  6. Install when you are ready. Epic’s installation guide directs you to select the game from the launcher’s Library.

What to check on Steam

Open the official Steam store listing and read the promotion wording. A statement such as play free until a deadline describes temporary access. Only treat an offer as free to keep when its official terms explicitly say so, then complete the account-addition process and verify the license. Installing files alone does not prove that you have lasting access.

Deadlines and missing games

Use the current offer’s date and time, including its time zone. There is no single US deadline for every promotion. Convert announced times to ET and PT carefully, and avoid leaving a claim until the final minute. Epic says missed promotions cannot be claimed for free after the indicated period.

If a game seems missing, check the correct account, library filters, hidden games and transaction confirmation. Follow the official Epic or Steam troubleshooting steps. A digital license is not an unconditional guarantee that online servers, every platform version or every DLC will remain available forever.
