If you’ve got a Switch 2 and never played Metaphor: ReFantazio, you can start it for free right now. Atlus released a Prologue demo on the Switch 2 eShop this week, and everything you do in it carries over to the full game when it launches on November 12 for 39.99 US dollars.
That’s not a throwaway slice either. Atlus’s 2024 fantasy RPG from Studio Zero, the team led by Persona veterans, won Best RPG, Best Narrative and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024. The demo lets you put real hours into it, then keep them.

What’s in the Switch 2 demo
The Prologue demo covers the opening section of the game. You start the story in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, where the king’s assassination kicks off a tournament for the throne, and you get proper dungeon crawling and battles with the Archetype job system, plus your first Followers, Metaphor’s take on Persona’s Social Links.
- Save transfer: confirmed by Atlus. Your demo save continues in the full version.
- No time limit on play sessions, though some features differ from the full game.
- Scope: Pocket Tactics and Final Weapon report the first four dungeons, 7 of the game’s 40 plus Archetypes and six Followers.
- Download size: about 29.8 GB, so clear some space first.
The demo first appeared in only some regions around October 12, the game’s second anniversary weekend. It’s now out worldwide, including the US eShop.

What players are saying
Under Nintendo Life’s demo announcement, the reaction splits two ways. Fans who’ve played it on other systems keep pushing it, praising the story, cast and combat, and one calls it the best Atlus game they’ve played. Several readers say they’ve already preordered or plan to try the demo first, and a few who tried it say the demo is good.
The biggest complaint isn’t about Metaphor itself. Many readers are wary of Atlus’s habit of releasing expanded versions years later, and say that makes them hesitant to buy at launch. Others grumbled about the almost 30 GB demo download. Nintendo Life’s own look at the September trailer noted some smeary static 3D assets, while saying performance seemed to hold up well enough.
This is how every big port should launch. A free demo with a working save transfer removes the main risk of buying a two year old RPG on new hardware: you can check how it runs on your own Switch 2, in handheld and docked, before you pay. At 39.99 US dollars, it’s also cheaper than it was at launch elsewhere.
Our Take
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a game that interests me, and I would play it on the Switch 2. A demo is a great way to get people in the door, especially since Atlus says your progress carries over to the full game. You get the first four dungeons and a taste of the Archetypes before the November 12 launch.
My one hesitation is the price. It's 70 US dollars on Steam right now, and I think that's a bit steep. That's a lot to ask, even for a game this well regarded.
So I'm waiting to see what the price looks like on Switch. If Atlus prices it more reasonably there, it becomes a much easier choice, and the demo gives people a safe way to check it out first.

Skip the 35th Anniversary Edition unless you really want the extras. The standard game is the full experience. And yes, the “Atlus will do a director’s cut” worry is fair, but nothing has been announced, and Metaphor already shipped as a complete game.
