Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware and Software Survey appears to show a major change in PC gaming: graphics systems reporting 16GB of VRAM have moved ahead of 8GB configurations for the first time.
There is, however, an important problem with that headline. Valve’s combined results and its Windows-only results tell two dramatically different stories.
The combined survey places 16GB of VRAM at 25.90%, narrowly ahead of 8GB at 25.32%. When the survey is filtered to Windows systems, 8GB remains comfortably in first place at 33.20%, while 16GB falls to only 11.03%.
That contradiction means the widely repeated claim that 16GB has definitively replaced 8GB as Steam’s most common VRAM configuration needs considerably more context.
What Steam’s combined results show
In the combined Windows, macOS and Linux view, 16GB VRAM increased by 1.40 percentage points during July, reaching 25.90%.
The 8GB category moved in the opposite direction, dropping by 0.32 points to 25.32%. The difference is only 0.58 percentage points, but it is enough to place 16GB at the top of Valve’s combined table.
Those numbers have generated headlines suggesting that PC gamers have finally abandoned 8GB graphics cards. The Steam survey itself does not support such a simple conclusion.
Valve states that Windows represents 93.67% of the systems included in the July survey. When Windows is selected as a separate platform, 8GB VRAM accounts for 33.20% of surveyed systems. The 16GB category sits much lower at 11.03%.
Linux and macOS add more complications
The Linux-only results also keep 8GB slightly ahead. Valve reports 17.08% for 8GB and 16.33% for 16GB on Linux.
On macOS, the situation is reversed: 16GB leads with 39.34%, compared with 25.51% for 8GB. Many modern Macs use unified memory rather than a conventional pool of dedicated graphics memory, making direct comparisons with Windows gaming GPUs more complicated.
Valve’s public survey page does not clearly explain how its combined VRAM result is calculated or why it differs so significantly from the individual platform tables. The different views may use separate samples or reporting rules, but that remains an inference rather than an official explanation.
Until Valve provides clarification, 16GB should only be described as the leader in the survey’s combined table—not as the confirmed standard among Windows gaming PCs.
Valve has already corrected VRAM reporting problems
This is not the first time Steam’s VRAM numbers have raised questions.
Earlier in 2026, Valve updated the Steam client after discovering that VRAM was not being reported correctly on certain graphics cards. It also changed how systems containing multiple display adapters are handled, choosing the adapter with the highest detected memory capacity.
Valve did not publish corrected historical survey figures after that problem was discovered. This makes the general direction of the data useful, but individual monthly changes should not be treated as a perfect census of the PC gaming market.
Participation in the Steam survey is optional and anonymous, while the group of users selected can change from one month to another.
Graphics card prices are rising in parts of the market
The growing interest in higher-capacity graphics cards arrives during a difficult period for buyers.
An August 2026 analysis of US Newegg listings found substantial increases in the median prices of several GeForce RTX 50-series models compared with June. The RTX 5060 reportedly increased by 27%, while the RTX 5070 rose by 36%.
The 16GB RTX 5060 Ti recorded the largest increase in that comparison, moving from a median price of approximately $570 to around $805—a rise of roughly 39%.
These figures represent median listings from one US retailer, not official global price increases. Pricing can differ significantly across the United States, Europe and individual retailers, while some GPU models remained relatively stable.
Does this mean 8GB graphics cards are obsolete?
No. The survey does not prove that 8GB GPUs have suddenly become unusable.
Required VRAM depends on the game, resolution, texture settings, ray tracing features and the quality of the game’s memory management. Many existing titles continue to perform well on 8GB cards, particularly at 1080p with sensible settings.
The concern is mainly about new purchases and long-term value. Buyers choosing a mid-range graphics card for several years of use should consider 12GB or 16GB models where pricing and performance make sense.
The broader trend clearly points toward larger memory capacities. What Steam’s conflicting July data cannot reliably confirm is whether the 16GB milestone has already been reached across the PC gaming audience.
For now, the accurate conclusion is more cautious: 16GB leads Valve’s combined table, but 8GB remains the dominant VRAM configuration among surveyed Windows systems.
